Vital Statistics for Term 2
We had 1765 engagements with primary school children and their parents at Bus Stop Cafe in Term 2, which has just ended. This represents 180 visits per week or 60 per day on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays. We have an average of 11 students per day doing a Bonus Question to learn more from the story. And we have an average of 10 people per day staying back after 3:45pm to develop deeper relationships.
It feels like we’re ‘at capacity’, with the building full of children after school, but we have many options to expand our ‘throughput’ and enable people to linger afterwards. We just need more team to support them. We’re building a new bench from which to serve chocolate milk at the moment. And we are trusting God to be ‘the lamp unto our feet’ as we make the decisions required to best serve the locals in Jesus’ name. One example of this is the recent introduction of Soup and Garlic Bread on Wednesdays to help us care more deeply for those coming for more.
The significance of caring interventions
Christine and I were recently listening to a Podcast on Australian True Crime, The Bank Robber’s Boy. It told the story of a boy on the run across Australia with his criminal father. He suffered trauma in orphanages, foster care, interrupted schooling and violence from other criminals, but what jumped out to us was the power of a few people who cared for him, who showed him kindness, who believed in him, who brought him some light. At a basic level, this is what we do at Little Miracles. We intervene with kindness and faith to say, ‘You matter. You are a wonderful, important and gifted child’.
Term 3 – Dancing Beginning
Several circumstances have occurred that make us think maybe God is leading us to begin a dance time for primary school children. We’ll launch this as a test in Term 3 on Tuesday afternoons.
Time for a Holiday
Shortly after publishing this we will have a board meeting and then a leaders’ training day and then Christine and I will be going on holiday until Term 3 begins. I will also be attending the Project Nexus retreat in Adelaide and visiting my daughter and granddaughter in Darwin!
