What an amazing year!
This year we focussed everything on “Teaching Corio Kids about Jesus”. This meant stopping other experimental outreach work and learning to disciple and care for the children and families coming to Bus Stop Cafe. Three days a week we welcomed on average 45 children and parents and worked on building caring relationships. We improved the front garden of the church so now we’re playing in the front garden of the church! We’ve received funding and encouragement from the Holy Spirit to “Teach more kids about Jesus” in 2026.
Highschool Students Visit
Forty five students from Geelong Baptist College came to Bus Stop Cafe as part of their Christian Living subject. We explained Jesus’ command to love our neighbours begins with asking: Who are our neighbours? What do they need? We found that our neighbours in Corio consist of Anglos – often single mothers with some connection to prison or domestic violence and migrants from Myanmar, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa. We used Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ to find the needs of the locals are mainly spiritual not material.
They have accommodation, food, safety, transport, healthcare and education. What they lack are the inner resources of a positive identity, community and purpose. We then asked, “Which of these needs does Bus Stop Cafe address and how? We found that, by providing a warm welcome and free chocolate milk, this affirms people and helps build community. By teaching them about Jesus we are providing a positive foundation for true identity and purpose for living. Offering prayer unleashes the power of God to help people become everything God wants them to be. We are hoping to have further relationship with Geelong Baptist College.
How to Teach More Kids about Jesus in 2026?
Please join us as we commit to following Jesus’ invitation to teach more kids about Jesus in 2026 and beyond. Today I’m inviting you to commit to journey with us in prayer, as a financial partner or just as a spectator. This journey will be about seeking Jesus. I’m convinced the way to teach MORE kids about Jesus is found as we seek to walk closely with Jesus at every turn, not ahead of His will, not behind, not to the left nor the right but right in the centre of His will, in the palm of His hand.
This will be an exciting journey but first, for the next 6 months, we need to just seek Jesus and His will for this ministry and claim the exciting fact that we will teach more kids about Jesus. This is God’s ministry and He will provide the people we need and the way forward. We have to resist the urge to follow our good ideas on how to expand, of which there are many! The way is found IN Jesus. Afterall He said, I AM THE WAY.
Random Good Stuff to Share
We have two new Board Members, praise God. We need new workers for next year but I’m sure God will provide them. I (Angus) got to play drums in two prisons in December for Christmas celebrations and I hosted a Christmas Carols singing session in Corio Village Shopping Centre. We met with Megan Scott from Prison Fellowship and agreed to partner at the end of Term 1 for a School Holiday Program. We’ve also received a grant from the City of Greater Geelong to purchase more outdoor furniture for the front garden.
